Israelis and Palestinians campaigning for peace during war
Israeli forces have been pushing into central and southern Gaza, forcing tens of thousands of civilians to flee to overcrowded shelters. Israel started its retaliatory campaign there after Hamas militants attacked Israel on 07 October, killed at least 1,200 people and took as hostages about 240 others.
Almost 22,000 people have been killed in Gaza since. Israel's Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said last night that the war will last many months. This is not what the founders of Combatants For Peace - an Israeli -Palestinian non governmental organisation founded in 2006 - have been campaigning for.
Two of the founders- Sulaiman Khatib, a former Palestinian prisoner and Avner Wishnitzer, a former Israeli elite soldier have been speaking to Julian Worricker. He began by asking Avner, how he felt having this conversation about peace at a time of war.
