Any Day, Any Weather - Saving Lives in Glencoe
The Â鶹Éç's Alexandra Mackenzie joins a rescue team on their search for a missing hillwalker in Glencoe.
Glencoe is regarded by many as the Highlands’ most scenic and historic glen. Visitors from all over the world flock here year after year, inspired by the sheer scale and the grandeur of its surrounding mountains. But extremely harsh and unforgiving conditions can make it perilous, and for the mountain rescue volunteers who operate 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year – the work is demanding.
Across Scotland, these teams have never been busier since lockdown measures were eased. Police Scotland say 27 people have died walking and climbing this year alone – including eight in Glencoe, recently the scene of one of the worst mountaineering accidents for years.
In this episode of our 5 Minutes On podcast, Alexandra Mackenzie – the Â鶹Éç’s Scotland Correspondent – joined the volunteers at work during a search for a missing hillwalker.
