The Price of Summer in the Sun

Some top destinations - like Crete and Tenerife - are up by more than 20%. So is the holiday price hike affecting people's plans?

Meet Jess and Joanna. They run Hinds and Bark hair and nail salon at Castleford in West Yorkshire. There's always plenty of chat with customers about holidays and plans for the summer - but this year, many are having to shop around because of rising costs. Data from the travel comparison site, Travelsupermarket - shared exclusively with 麻豆社 News - show prices to some of the most popular summer holiday hot-spots, including Crete, Tenerife and Majorca, are up by more than 20% this year. The cost of annual holiday insurance has increased by 10.5% - and airport parking was up 9.5% this May compared to May 2022. The good news is that the price of hiring a car abroad has fallen in all the top destinations, after a major spike in prices last summer. The 麻豆社's Cost of Living Correspondent, Colletta Smith, has been looking into this for our latest 5 Minutes On podcast - The Price of Summer in the Sun.
