Tell It To Steve - They Made It In America
Archive chats with Leona Lewis, Hugh Laurie, Anne Robinson and Russell Howard, plus a newly recorded catch-up with Sarah Millican to accompany an interview from 2011.
Featuring interviews from across 20 years of Steve Wright In The Afternoon on Radio 2, with guests who have not only been successful in the UK, but internationally as well – including that oh-so-difficult to crack market – the USA.
In order of appearance:
Sarah Millican (January 2011) – Sarah meets Steve for the first time, ahead of the second run of shows on her Chatterbox tour, where she’d play larger venues to meet the demand for tickets. From here on, Sarah was a regular guest on Steve Wright In The Afternoon, averaging an appearance at least once every 18 months.
Leona Lewis (October 2009) – a return visit for the winner of The X Factor in 2006, who’s about to release her second album Echo. Unusually for an artist who had been discovered via a TV talent show, Leona had quickly found fame in America, where her debut album Spirit and the single Bleeding Love had both reached number one.
Hugh Laurie (January 2006) – one of the many times that Steve interviewed Hugh but the only occasion when Hugh had only a few days before won a Golden Globe.
It’s a chat on the phone as Hugh is in Los Angeles filming the next season of his hit American TV drama series House, in which he played the lead role of Dr Gregory House.
Anne Robinson (May 2003) – as you would expect from Anne, an honest insight into what having a career in America means, in terms of the financial reward versus the relentless travel and long working hours.
Russell Howard (August 2019) – on the show to promote his Respite tour – Russell’s third and biggest world tour to date, which although interrupted by the pandemic, would eventually take him to 79 cities across 24 countries in 5 continents, including shows in America.
As ever the team are concerned that Russell might be working himself just a little bit too hard.
Sarah Millican (March 2023) – a newly recorded interview with Sarah, where she gets up specially early to give Steve a call from Denver, Colorado ahead of her Bobby Dazzler tour stopping off at the Paramount Theater.
Sarah talks about this recent American success and the reason behind it, and how the title of the tour is causing a bit of confusion. She also looks ahead to her next tour, which has the less-confusing-for-Americans title of Late Bloomer, and explains how a photo from her school days inspired it. And Sarah’s got good news for anyone struggling to download or stream the Bobby Dazzler tour.
