A new report which will be published this week says our coastal communities, such as Cleethorpes and Withernsea, are in critical need and their deprivation can often be hidden by regional data. The report called 'Communities on the Edge' was commissioned by the Coastal Communities Alliance, the Local Government Association Coastal Special Interest Group and the Coastal Partnerships Network and the 麻豆社 has been given exclusive access to it ahead of its publication on Wednesday 1st February 2023. The report says that levelling up has the potential to help transform these communities but it urges the Government to consider a number of recommendations such as appointing a dedicated Coastal Minister and reviewing the local Government funding formula. In a statement, a spokesperson from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities said: "Coastal communities play a key role in levelling up and we continue to support them to improve their economies. Since 2012 we have invested over 拢229 million through the Coastal Communities Fund to run 359 projects throughout the UK鈥檚 rural and coastal communities helping to create jobs and boost businesses." East Riding of Yorkshire Council was one of a number of councils which helped fund the research for this report. 麻豆社 Political Reporter Sarah Sanderson has been speaking to the Leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Councillor Jonathan Owen. In this interview Cllr Owen tells Sarah Sanderson about some of the challenges that people face when living on the coast and he says East Riding of Yorkshire Council is continuing to push for a fairer funding formula.
