The House of Representatives is currently in state of paralysis.
The Republican leader, Kevin McCarthy, has been trying - in vain - to get elected as Speaker of the lower chamber of US Congress, but a cohort of right-wingers in his party have derailed him at every turn.
While the stand-off continues, the Republicans are unable to swear in members or pass bills.
But why is this happening? And what could eventually break the deadlock?
