Martin Lewis: How to find money-saving home appliances
Martin Lewis discusses the home appliances that could save you money.
Speaking on his 麻豆社 Sounds podcast, Martin reveals the equation you should be using to decide which home appliances will save you the most money.
5 Live listener Rob has been noticing that his apartment has become damp since trying to dry his washing inside his home.
He asked: 鈥淚f I was to buy a dehumidifier, would it be cheaper than using the heating to keep the place dry?鈥
You asked, so Martin answered.
鈥淒ehumidifiers take water out of the air rather than use the heating and they鈥檙e much lower wattage appliances than standard heating.
鈥淪o if the dehumidifier works for you, it will definitely have lower electricity bills,鈥 he says.
Martins explains his equation for working out what home appliance can save you the most money,
1. 鈥淔irst of all find the wattage of an item.鈥
2. 鈥淩emember 1000 watts is a kilowatt (which is how electricity tends to be priced)
so find out what fraction of a kilowatt it鈥檚 using.鈥
3. 鈥淵ou pay roughly 34p per kilowatt per hour on average, so times that by 34p per hour of use.鈥
