The stolen lives of Ukraine's young disabled people
A 麻豆社 News investigation exposes the abuse and neglect of disabled children and young people locked away in institutions across Ukraine.
There is a lot of international attention on Ukraine after the invasion of the country by Russia. With that has come a great deal of sympathy and support from around the world. But while there is so much focus there, human rights groups are aiming to uncover a shameful secret. An investigation by 麻豆社 News has exposed the abuse and neglect of disabled people locked away in institutions across Ukraine. More than 100,000 children and young people live in these facilities, hidden away from society. Human rights investigators say Ukraine should not be allowed to join the EU until it abolishes a care system which institutionalises its most vulnerable people. The Ukrainian government did not respond to a request for further comment.
For 5 Minutes On, 麻豆社 Correspondent, Dan Johnson, is on the road with those investigators.
