How do we protect egg donors from possible exploitation?
The World Health Organization records that about 48 million couples and 186 million individuals experience infertility concerns globally. Infertility issues among women due to abnormalities of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uterus drive the demand for advanced reproductive treatments. Egg retrieval, or Egg harvesting as many would call it is a surgical procedure done to remove the eggs from a woman's ovaries to freeze them for future use or for the intro Vitro fertilisation process. The procedure is becoming quite popular in Nigeria, South Africa and Egypt. With this rise in popularity, some egg donors are increasingly seeing it as a quick way to make money. This is against the backdrop that most African countries do not have legal frameworks to regulate the sector. In this episode, we find out what should be done to protect egg donors from possible exploitation.
