38% of unsafe abortions in Malawi conducted by traditional healers
Malawi is one of the countries with the highest maternal mortality rates in the world this is according to a 2017 joint report by WHO and UNICEF. Though the impact of Covid on maternal health is yet to be fully documented, past research on the extent of unsafe abortions has seen the Malawi government working to reduce the number of women procuring unsafe abortions. A 2015 report by the Guttmacher Institute and the Centre for Reproductive Health at the University of Malawi College of Medicine, indicates nearly a fifth of maternal deaths in Malawi were as a result of complications that from unsafe abortions, 38% of these unsafe abortions are being conducted by the traditional healers.
