No political arrests in HK - pro-Beijing politician
Hong Kongers are 鈥渁rrested and put to jail not because of their political stance, but because they鈥檝e broken the law,鈥 a newly elected pro-Beijing legislative councillor says.
When asked about raids on university campuses, arrests of democracy campaigners and banning of teachers, Dominic Lee Tsz King told 麻豆社 Hardtalk鈥檚 Stephen Sackur: 鈥淪ome of them have engaged in violent protests have engaged in vandalism, have engaged in incitement鈥 which are 鈥渃ommon law offences鈥.
Lee Tsz King of the New People鈥檚 Party won a seat in December 2021鈥檚 legislative elections, which saw pro-Beijing candidates sweep the board.
Many Hong Kong pro-democracy activists and politicians have been arrested or forced into exile.
Some newspapers have closed and critical voices silenced amid a growing crackdown.
