Breakup: Episode One: Drawing the Line

When Ophelia Byrne goes to find out what happened when the border in Ireland was finalised almost a century ago, a discovery in the archives makes her question the whole process

Across three episodes, Ophelia Byrne follows a line on a map into the world of the Irish Boundary Commission – set up nearly a century ago to finalise the shape of the border in Ireland. The stakes are high - but with high statecraft, secrecy, split communities and thousands of lives changed forever - a chance discovery in the archives makes Ophelia question the whole Boundary Commission process

Episode One: Drawing the Line

Ophelia reveals how the line on the map of Ireland is first drawn - and how the Irish Boundary Commission sets off in 1925 to finalise its shape. Tracing descendants of those made their case to belong on one side of the border or the other - previously classified government correspondence suggests one of the Commissioners may not be playing by the rules
