'Reparatory justice should not be a narrow path’
Reparatory justice need to be tailored to different communities and their needs, the chairman of a commission seeking justice and reparations for the descendants of enslaved Africans has said.
Sir Hilary Beckles told Â鶹Éç Hardtalk’s Zeinab Badawi: “There are multiple roads leading to the roundabout.
“And we don't want to necessarily to have everyone walking like sheep down a narrow path. We are a community of multiple experiences and diversities.â€
In the United States there was a argument for cash in hand as part of the repayment for the loss of land, businesses and personal victimisation, he said.
But in the Caribbean there was argument for a reparatory justice model about developing infrastructure including more schools and public health, Sir Hilary said.
