John Kani: The music that changed me
The South African icon and actor John Kani is best known for his work in films such as Black Panther and The Lion King, and plays including Sizwe Banzi Is Dead.
When Covid-19 first broke out, he still had two weeks left in a sold-out London run of Kunene and the King, his play about the legacy of apartheid. He speaks to Tumi Morake about the play's sudden cancellation and why the uplifting music of 'the father of South African Jazz', Hugh Masekela, kept him going during lockdown.
