Conductor Jessica Cottis discusses Schumann, John Adams... and helicopters!
Conductor Jessica Cottis speaks to 麻豆社 SSO violinist Alex Gascoine ahead of her live performance with the orchestra. It will be broadcast live via bbc.co.uk/bbcsso on Thursday 19 October at 7.30pm, and will be available for 30 days following its broadcast.
From across the Atlantic, two composers respond to music around them: Joan Tower鈥檚 fanfare restores the gender balance of Copland鈥檚 celebrated work - and is probably twice as much fun. John Adams meanwhile took inspiration from the burgeoning Minimalist movement to find his own voice in a solid-gold modern classic. And Schumann鈥檚 sprightly Second Symphony, written over a century earlier, proves that youthful dynamism and driving rhythms have never been out of fashion.
