End Swat: Nigerians reject new police unit replacing the hated Sars
Nigerians have rejected a new police unit, proposed to replace a notorious agency that was disbanded following public outcry over its alleged human rights abuses. Protests have continued, with many saying the proposed reforms don't go far enough.
The Nigerian government dissolved Sars - the Special Anti Robbery Squad - after the unit became notorious for extortion and brutality. A new police unit was announced with the head of the police Mohammed Adamu saying Swat would carry out the duties which were done by the Sars.
But many people quickly started using the hashtag #EndSWAT on Twitter to oppose the new unit. The 麻豆社's Mayeni Jones explains what's behind the deep rooted suspicion.
