I Am What I Am
I Am What I Am
Like orchestral musicians everywhere, the musicians here at Â鶹Éç NOW have spent much of lockdown appearing in collaborative montages, a number of which have focused on particular occasions and festive dates.
With Pride celebrations worldwide happening very differently this year, we leapt at the opportunity to join the musical expertise of our musicians with the enthusiasm and diversity of the LGTBQ+ and Allies community across Wales. We’ve produced a joint celebration of Pride featuring our musicians alongside a gloriously wide range of singers – from West End names to amateur choirs, all united in performing the ultimate Pride anthem: ‘I Am What I Am’.
Written by the late, great Jerry Herman for La Cage Aux Folles, which won 6 Tony Awards in 1984, the song celebrates the right of everyone to be themselves, so what better way to mark the passing of a true Broadway legend than with this most immortal of his works – from a show which has gone on to win Olivier and Tony Awards or numerous revivals.
This project marks the first time Â鶹Éç NOW has worked directly with the LGBTQ+ community and allies in this way, and we’re delighted to present this fusion of our professional orchestra and the raw talents of so many community singers in this way.
