Jonny Rimmer is back with a brand new Fresh Cuts, featuring 4 female emcees from Scotland that you have to check out. Qyeen Sweets, Empress, Be Charlotte and Ladyboss. Qyeen Sweets from Edinburgh group Northern Xposure, is not only a pioneering female emcee.
She’s also one of the first Scottish hip hop artists full stop.
She’s collaborated with some of the greatest names in UK hip hop – so that’s Jehst, Klashnekoff, you name it.
She's played Glastonbury and featured on the Â鶹Éç several times. Refreshingly, she’s kept it real despite her successes. You know, she's always represented where she's from and she’s kept her own
accent. And she’ll have definitely been an influence on some of the rappers on this list.
Empress is a new MC on the scene
She’s put out dubs on her Soundcloud and a lot of sort of freestyles on her own YouTube channel.
But it’s quickly obvious that she knows what she’s doing. She flows well. She uses punchlines and similes. She stays on beat. It’s a shame she’s only done freestyles so far because I think if she did put out a
record then people would buy it.
If you’ve not caught Be Charlotte yet then I don’t know what rock you’ve been hiding under because she’s been absolutely everywhere for the past month or two.
Last month she picked up Best Electronic artist at the Scottish Alternative Music Awards, which is why I think it’s worth pointing out that Charlotte isn’t just a rapper.
It just so happens that she’s a very capable emcee. You’ll see from that video, some of the rhymes she does are really well put together. Amazingly of all, she’s also still in her teens as well so there’s a lot of potential there.
The next person I’d shout out is Ladyboss, formerly known as Stacey Novelistt.
You may have heard of her before because she was the first Scottish female emcee on Radio 1Xtra, which is a pretty impressive feat.
She’s currently working on her full debut LP and you can hear stuff on her Soundcloud.
She messes around with different styles of production so props to her for that.
That’s my list. Are there any female emcees that you want to shout out? Please leave in the comments below.
