Ruby Grace Amar: Amber
Winner of the 麻豆社 Proms Inspire Competition 2018 (Lower Junior category)
Ruby Grace Amar, born 2004, is a singer and composer.
In 2018, Ruby was selected from hundreds of entrants as one of the winners in the Lower Junior category of the annual 麻豆社 Proms Inspire Competition. She performed her winning piece, Amber, at the Proms Inspire Concert at the 麻豆社鈥檚 Radio Theatre on 22 August 2018. Ruby performed alongside pianist John Reid and singers Margaret Cameron, Wendy Nieper, Amanda Morrison and Julia Simpson.
鈥淎mber was inspired by an early-evening walk in Idless Woods, Cornwall. It describes the colour of the leaves when the sun shone through them, catching the light in a way that is similar to the translucency of amber stone. The chorus is about seeing something so beautiful, your gaze clouding over and your thoughts ceasing to be a priority: it symbolises the feeling of being free. The second verse reflects the leaves creating overlapping shadows and shapes for the light to shine through. It provokes emotions from the harmonies and transforms the colours into notes. I have illustrated the images that represent the flow and intensity of the song in a graphic score to show the visual contrasts of the verses and the chorus.鈥
