What is the Forced Marriage Unit?
The Forced Marriage Unit is featured in the Â鶹Éç series Inside the Foreign Office. It was set up in its current form in 2005 and its job is to help anyone who is forced into marriage. That, of course, is different from an arranged marriage where both parties consent. Forced marriage is what it says – a woman or girl, and more rarely a man, is made to marry without their agreement. Each year fourteen hundred people are at risk, 78 per cent are female and a considerable number are under 18.
Sophie Lott, a former designated safeguarding officer who features in Inside the Foreign Office joins Jenni Murray to talk about her work in the Unit and how they find and help young people at risk.
