What is 'blackfishing'?
The act of ‘blackfishing’ involves using make-up, hair products and sometimes even surgery to appear black or ethnically ambiguous. In the last few weeks a number of white, female online influencers have been accused of following this trend in order to gain more followers. Why is blackfishing problematic and what does it say about the way social media views women of colour? Jane Garvey spoke to Wanna Thompson, a Toronto-based music, culture and lifestyle blogger and Jacqueline Springer, a contemporary black culture journalist to find out.
