What is fake news and how can you identify it?

麻豆社 Africa held a conference to discuss how vulnerable Africa is to misinformation and the steps that can be taken to tackle fake news.

With growing internet penetration, coupled with social media, it鈥檚 never been easier to spread misinformation.

The 麻豆社 just released its research that looked at the cause and spread of fake news in Africa.The study scanned through 11,000 articles and social networking platforms and it showed that employment scams make up 6.2% of fake news stories shared in WhatsApp. That's Nigeria.

In Kenya, scams related to money and technology contributes to about a third of the fake news stories shared in WhatsApp conversations.Whats worrying is that at the moment, not many of us in either country are using fact checking websites. Fact checking company africacheck.org, say they get 27,200 unique visits per month. This shows that people are relying on more organic, human to human fact checking mechanisms.

Ethiopia and Rwanda recently announced their cabinets appointing women to half of the positions. In addition Ethiopia just appointed its first female president.

Research from the accountancy organisation, Grant Thornton Found that globally, 75% of businesses had at least one woman in senior management this year.

And In fact, Africa is performing better than the global average; the figure is at 89%, which is a 7% increase from 2017.
