'...living a lie is not living life...' - referee Ryan Atkin on outlawing homophobic and transphobic abuse at football matches
It's been nearly thirty years since Parliament passed a law outlawing racist abuse at football matches.
But the same legislation didn't mention anything about chants abusing the LGBTQ community - and even now, there's no specific clause in the law that can be used to prosecute fans who are homophobic or transphobic at a game.
Now, campaigners are working with MPs to try and get that changed.
One of the people supporting the bid is Ryan Atkin. He's an experienced official who has actually refereed Guernsey FC games at Footes Lane - and made history last year when he became the first openly gay professional referee in English football.
He's been talking to our Sport Producer Jack Murley about the campaign, his decision to come out, his pick to win the World Cup, and about VAR as well.
