The Long Listen: How to help children whose mothers are in prison
Criminologist Dr Shona Minson guest edits Afternoon Edition with presenter Nihal Arthanayake.
Her question is: 鈥淗ow do we prevent children being punished for their mothers crimes?鈥
It鈥檚 estimated that around 17,000 children in England and Wales are affected by their mother being in prison, according to charity the Howard League for Penal Reform.
95% are forced to leave their homes as a result, living with relatives or foster families.
Sometimes there鈥檚 no childcare in place, meaning an emergency plan has to be implemented.
