When they do their job well, you never hear about them - and when they make a mistake, you hear about nothing else.
Yet without referees, football across the islands simply wouldn't be able to happen. So, what is it that makes someone chose to be the person in the middle, and do we need to do more to encourage people to give it a go?
David Brunton - the referee development officer from the Jersey FA - has been speaking to Sportscene's Jack Murley.
