How a London cabbie inspired Simon Schama
Taxi driver Gary's love of history made Schama realise how important his series 'A History of Britain' would be. It was the only O-Level Gary failed, but the subject meant so much to him that he kept a dog-eared history book under the seat of his cab.
Plus, how should a TV historian connect with the audience? "If you’re too chummy, it’s creepy, you’re just like a bore in a pub," says Schama. But "you can't be so much of an authority that it all feels like homework."
