Not your average carnival princess

The women's carnival traditions in Bonn, Germany can be traced back to 1824, when a group of washer women in Bonn-Beuel dropped their work for the day and got together to form a women's committee. Nowadays, local women still gather on what's known as Weiberfastnacht to 'overthrow' the Mayor and mark the start of the carnival season in the area. Monika Hoerig, spokesperson for the City of Bonn, explains the roots of this symbol of female emancipation.
