Clough told me I wasn't good enough for England - Pearce
Former Nottingham Forest captain Stuart Pearce recalls a conversation he had with Brian Clough after being called up to the England squad for the first time.
The defender was discussing Clough, who was his manager at Nottingham Forest, in the new series of 'At home... with Colin Murray.'
Pearce said: "I think he was saying: 'You keep your feet on the floor at this football club otherwise they'll have ya!'
"From there he settled my nerves, so I had someone to turn around (and say): 'I'll show you!'
"It was great psychology and you talk about Shankly, Shankly was a psychologist, Cloughy was a psychologist, fantastic forerunner to psychology in football.
Pearce spent 12 years at Nottingham Forest where he made over 400 appearances, he won 78 caps for England and was part of the squad that reached the 1990 World Cup semi-final.
