Graeae鈥檚 Midwich Cuckoos: a silent, signed and text interpretation of an audio drama

A bold new version of a science fiction classic, with a modern twist on communication.

A bold new version of a science fiction classic, with a modern twist on communication.

Six months after the death of her father, Prof Zellerby - blown up along with the extraordinary half human, half alien children, the Midiwch Cuckoos - Michaela is preparing a talk on this dramatic experience. As she rehearses her speech, she looks back at what it was like growing up with the Cuckoos, how her own father struggled with her deafness and how surviving Cuckoos around the world might fare better than those whom she knew in Midwich.

The film is inspired by a character in the audio drama.

Graeae, a disabled led company, is one of the most radical high impact theatre companies in the UK. For the first time, Graeae has teamed up with independent audio production company NPL, to make an innovative foray into audio.

Jenny Sealey, Graeae artistic director, and Polly Thomas, NPL co-producer, have formed a close creative partnership over many years. In this new venture, they continue developing a new aesthetic of the audio world, incorporating sign language alongside spoken English. Working with a deaf director with an instinctive visceral relationship with sound is a first for Radio 4 and brings new sensibility to the process.

Jenny鈥檚 own understanding of The Midwich Cuckoos, an iconic sci-fi novel, is based on growing up feeling different. By casting deaf and disabled actors and a disabled composer, we bring a new sensitivity, trying to grapple with the complexity of difference, in a brave modernisation from award winning writer Roy Williams.

A Naked Productions & Graeae Theatre collaboration for 麻豆社 Radio 4.
