Money, school uniforms and the problem with branding
Sacha Trigg, a mum from Manchester, has said 鈥榖randing鈥 is the reason for 鈥榮kyrocketing prices鈥 after she started a scheme to provide free school uniforms to her local community.
A mum from Manchester has started a scheme designed to provide free school uniforms to families in the local community. Sacha Trigg from Cheadle Hulme has created the School Uniform Project in an attempt to help parents with soaring costs. She spoke to 5live:
鈥淎 lot of schools demand their jumpers, their blazers, all have a school logo which then means that they can, in effect, charge what they want.鈥
She continued:
鈥淐urrently in the Manchester, Stockport area we鈥檝e got a donation system where people will bring me their old school uniforms. I will then, if they have pen marks or paint marks or whatever other marks that children get, try my best to get the stains out with whatever I can, make them look as good as new.鈥
A Department for Education spokesperson said:
"All children, regardless of background or ability, should have the opportunity to fulfil their potential and we are absolutely clear that no family should be at a disadvantage because of the price of a school uniform. Our existing guidance is clear that when setting their uniform policies, schools should keep costs to a minimum and be affordable for everyone."
