Police pressures: The view from bobbies on the beat
Police officers in the West Midlands say they have seen a massive change in front line policing.
5 live spent the late shift with PC Nick Birch and PC Chris Smith.
They are part of the emergency response team, covering Birmingham East. Both officers said they'd seen a change in the level of service they offer the public.
PC Chris Smith said, "we just seems to be juggling so many mote jobs these days...and there just never appears to be enough officers on the street, to meet that demand."
In June 2017, West Midlands Chief Constable Dave Thompson said there was increasing pressure on police forces, "the strain is showing from recent weeks and we’d have real challenges in dealing with something like the 2011 riots again."
A Home Office spokesperson said, "The government has protected overall police spending in real terms since Spending Review 2015 and this year West Midlands Police is receiving £1.6m more direct resource funding than in 2015/16."
