Drum marathon for Â鶹Éç Music Day at Ilfracombe CofE Junior School
Pupils and staff in Devon celebrated Â鶹Éç Music Day 2017 in unique style with Taiko drumming. The marathon lasted 7 hours and 20 minutes and the number of school community members involved totalled 478!
All children and staff were invited to learn how to play (and dance) the ‘Japanese Jig’ on Taiko drums. A carefully choreographed routine enabled pupils and staff to have a continuous beat of the drums resounding around the hall and gym over one and a half days. Four Taiko principles were embraced. Attitude: Always doing your best. Kata: Body language. Technique: Simple things done well. Ki: Enjoyment. Each class had a 20 minute slot without a break in the rhythmic drumming, continuing throughout lunchtime with adult male and female groups keeping the beat. All players felt energised and exhausted by the end of a successful and collaborative event.
