Swing and disco Bach-inspired compositions by East Stour Primary School
As part of their 麻豆社 Music Day celebrations, Year 4 and 5 music leaders at a school in Kent ran a workshop afternoon for their peers in Year 4, who have had 20 whole-class violin lessons. They watched the Ten Pieces film, then were asked to draw patterns to create a graphic score while listening to Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor. The pupils were challenged use that score to create a piece of music in an afternoon. They explored using different instruments, from the first-time use of a cello to more familiar violins and different keyboard sounds available on the organ and piano. They were able to choose any rhythmic groove they wished.
From these graphic scores the two groups created two pieces of music - one Latin swing-influenced and one disco inspired, using a range of instrumental effects to keep things 'spooky'! See what the pupils came up with.
