Harman: Councils 'can't afford' sprinklers in tower blocks

A huge fire has engulfed a tower block in West London. Twelve people have died so far.

In 2009 six people died in a fire at Lakanal House tower block in Harriet Harman鈥檚 constituency. The Labour MP for Camberwell and Peckham told 5 live:
鈥淲e know councils want to put sprinklers in to tower blocks but they can鈥檛 afford to because the government has cut their money.鈥

Harman added: 鈥淚t鈥檚 not systems, it鈥檚 not humans failure, it鈥檚 basic, after Lakanal House nobody could be in any doubt what needed to be done, for example Southwark Council has done a rolling process of inspection after the Lakanal House fire because they were concerned, they鈥檝e also put sprinklers in hostals and old people鈥檚 homes, but they haven鈥檛 had the money to put sprinklers in tower blocks and actually sprinklers do save lives but they cost money鈥.
