The battle of Arras was another costly attempt to gain a breakthrough to be exploited to end the war. From 9 April to 16 May, 1917, British, Canadian, and Australian troops attacked German trenches. Among the casualties were two gifted Scottish brothers - students at the University of Glasgow who were killed within a month of each other - Harry and Frederick Hayworth, sons of a bank agent living in Lennoxtown. Harry was the dux of his school, Lenzie Academy, and won a bursary to go to university. His death was noticed by retired history teacher Alan Christie and it is still used today to teach students at Lenzie Academy about the war - like modern day Junior Dux, school pupil Teresa Namaalwa. They join Glasgow University PhD Candidate, Euan Loarridge (who has written about the two brothers and about Harry鈥檚 unit the 10th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) to talk to Louise Yeoman about Harry and Fred.
