Does new fiver 鈥榙umb down鈥� the English language?
The new five pound note has been accused of devaluing the English language by not including quote marks or a full stop with the famous phrase by Winston Churchill.
The quote on the reverse of the five pound reads: 鈥滻 have nothing to offer but blood toil, tears, and sweat.鈥� but does not include quotation marks or a full stop.
Dr Tara Stubbs, an English lecturer from Oxford University, told 5 live Breakfast: 鈥淚t鈥檚 assuming that everybody will know that Churchill said this very famous phrase but actually somebody who鈥檚 not from the UK probably wouldn鈥檛 know that.鈥�
Dr Stubbs added that the quote should 鈥渄efinitely鈥� include a full stop at the end.
