Does new fiver ‘dumb down’ the English language?
The new five pound note has been accused of devaluing the English language by not including quote marks or a full stop with the famous phrase by Winston Churchill.
The quote on the reverse of the five pound reads: ”I have nothing to offer but blood toil, tears, and sweat.” but does not include quotation marks or a full stop.
Dr Tara Stubbs, an English lecturer from Oxford University, told 5 live Breakfast: “It’s assuming that everybody will know that Churchill said this very famous phrase but actually somebody who’s not from the UK probably wouldn’t know that.”
Dr Stubbs added that the quote should “definitely” include a full stop at the end.
