What links Reading and the German city of Düsseldorf?

Reading and Düsseldorf have been twinned since the Royal Berkshire Regiment were stationed in the German town after the Second World War.

Chris Forsey and Robert Dimmock from the Reading Düsseldorf Association:

"Well of course immediately after the war the British along with the other allied forces were occupying Germany, and specifically the Royal Berkshire Regiment were in Düsseldorf.

"When a war has gone through a city it can be terrible. The commanding officer of the Royal Berkshire Regiment appealed for towns in Berkshire to give support.

"The Mayor of Reading at the time, Phoebe Cusden, issued an appeal, and eventually £100 and half a tonne of food was raised."
