Thomas More: On the Marriages of the Utopians
An extract from More's Utopia read by John Dougall. Quirky attitudes to courtship and marriage on More's fictional island.
Throughout December we celebrate an influential book, Thomas More's Utopia which was published 500 years ago. More's thinking was so original that it continues to provoke strong responses to this day. Just imagine what his ideas about choosing a spouse on the fictitious island of Utopia must have seemed like to the book's first readers, to people in cold northern Europe that was only just emerging from the Middle Ages. The reader is John Dougall.
