Should there be more care for veterans?

The conservative MP Johnny Mercer, a former army captain who served three tours in Afghanistan, said veterans who risk their lives fighting for the country are sometimes let down by the government.

He believes more should be done to support veterans, while others have called for Theresa May to create a brand new government department for veterans, with a minister at the helm to oversee care for servicemen and women and their families.

Victoria Derbyshire spoke to him and Pamela Deakin from Walking with the Wounded, who works with veterans dealing with mental health issues and homelessness after service.

Brenda Hale, whose husband Mark was killed in Afghanistan in 2009, also took part, as well as David Woods who served in the army in Northern Ireland, the Gulf War and Bosnia and who now works with homeless veterans and Andy Read who was with the Royal Navy in the Falklands and later diagnosed with PTSD.
