Stan Tracey's Under Milk Wood
Stan Tracey's jazz suite, Under Milk Wood, recorded in concert - a tribute to the great jazz musician, who died in December 2013.
When Stan Tracey died in December 2013 the jazz world lost one of it's most talented and inspiring pianists, composers and bandleaders. We pay tribute to him now in this re-broadcasting of a Radio 2 concert which celebrated the 40th anniversary of the original recording of his Under Milk Wood Suite in May 1965. The Suite was quickly recognised as one of the most significant of all British jazz works and was the first British jazz album to go round the world. It still enjoys an international reputation and remains the perfect musical mirror to one of the treasures of English poetic writing. Taking us into the heart of Thomas' fictional village of Llaregub were Ruth Madoc, Victor Spinetti and Philllip Madoc and playing the music was Stan's own quartet featuring Andrew Cleyndert on Bass, Clark Tracey on drums and on tenor saxophone just as he was on the original recording was Bobby Wellins.
