Duncan and Paul - The Band Plays On

Friends Duncan and Paul have played together in different bands for decades. Success is elusive, but their commitment to music remains just as strong.

Duncan and Paul are both Glasgow born and bred and formed the 2-piece band Fin-Ray almost 10-years ago. Duncan is on vocals and guitar and Paul plays drums. Although they've been in bands together for 26-years, this line-up is the first in which Duncan's been the singer. He still worries that his vocals aren't very good, but both he and Paul agree that things work best when it's just the two of them. Every other band they've been in has fallen out and broken up.

They came to record their Listening Project conversation straight from band practice in Glasgow's East End. Duncan had booked them in for a recording 2-days earlier when the booth caught his eye as he passed by in St. Enoch's Square, just outside Glasgow's St. Enoch's Centre.

They first crossed paths in 1989. Glasgow was buzzing with energy at the time. In 1988, the city hosted the Glasgow Garden Festival, which was attended by 4.3 million people. In 1990, Glasgow was awarded City of Culture status. Paul and Duncan first tasted success in the band Clan Spamborskee. They formed in 1989 and broke up one year later when two band members fell out after their biggest concert to date at Glasgow Green. It actually happened almost exactly 25-years ago (8th July, 1990). They'd had lot of press attention and played many gigs, and then it was all over. They appeared on the critical radar again in the mid-1990s with their band The Free Radicals. The Glasgow music scene was really vibrant at that point, with Mogwai, Belle and Sebastian, Arab Strap and The Delgados getting constant airplay on the John Peel Show.
