Ciara Phillips’ Every Woman, co-commissioned by Edinburgh Art Festival and 14-18 NOW, is the fourth in a series of ‘Dazzle’ ship designs developed by contemporary artists to commemorate the First World War.
‘Dazzle’ was developed by the British marine artist Norman Wilkinson to counter the threat posed by German U-Boats.
Every Woman honours the war contribution by women and marks the centenary of the Battle of the Somme and the Battle of Jutland. A largely female team was credited with designing the vast majority of dazzle patterns, working with Wilkinson in a dedicated department established in the Royal Academy, London; and across Edinburgh, Scotland and the UK.
Phillips is the fourth artist to create a Dazzle Ship for the centenary. Previous designs were created by Sir Peter Blake, Tobias Rehberger and Carlos Cruz- Diez.
Ciara Phillips’ Dazzle Ship, Every Woman, is moored at Prince of Wales Dock in Leith until 28 August.
