The Lochnagar Crater

The Lochnagar Crater is a deep hole caused by the detonation of a huge mine, planted by tunnellers in July 1916 on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. It was used as a temporary resting place immediately after the battle with many hundreds of bodies placed in it.

Richard Dunning who purchased the site in 1978 describes how it was once a scene of courage, suffering and sacrifice.
