Switching off the noisy alarms in hospitals to aid recovery
Technology helps to keep the sickest patients alive in hospital. But the alarms found in intensive care units can make as much noise as in a busy restaurant – loud enough to disturb both staff and patients.
Researchers say alternatives to alarms can help to quieten things down – such as placing alarms in a central location or using flashing lights instead of sounds. In this week’s Health Check Claudia Hammond hears about efforts to reduce the stress of noise in hospitals.
