The song of the Woodpigeon will be familiar to most people, and when it comes to choosing a home, they prefer suburban gardens, where they feel less threatened and delicious bird table meals are readily available to them.
During spring male Woodpigeons perform display flights to advertise their territory and attract a mate. And unusually their young, known as squabs, are fed by both parents on something called crop milk, a liquid rich in fats, not that dissimilar to mammalian milk.
The UK’s commonest type of pigeon, they are largely grey with a white neck patch and white wing patches. And their song (which follows the rhyme ‘take two cows taffy’) can be heard regularly on a spring morning, from rooftops, trees and chimney pots.
