There was also a mass migration of terrified families to towns and villages in the surrounding countryside. Many were residents of Belfast鈥檚 closely packed terraced housing, slum dwellers who had endured decades of neglect. An eyewitness was shocked by: 鈥淭he incredible dirt of the people, of children crawling with lice, not even house-trained.鈥
The official response to the disaster was far from satisfactory. One directive called for police marksmen to: 鈥淒estroy all dangerous animals at the zoo.鈥
