Gambia’s New Rappers
Young Gambians are creating their own style of rap using a mix of old and new
Rapping, or rhyming, isn’t new to the Gambia – the area is home to the Griot, storytellers who claim to be the original rhymers. We hear from the young people who are creating their own distinctive style of rap music, drawing on their own tribal languages, and mixing traditional instrument with electric beats.
Also on the show, we visit Drugstore – the most popular yet scruffiest youth club in Berlin, Germany – to find out why the council wants to shut it down; listeners’ letters; and columnists Sussed and Sassy bring their latest musings on Asian life in Britain.
