The US Defence Secretary announced in January 2015 the Americans would leave RAF Mildenhall, as well as both RAF Alconbury and Molesworth in Cambridgeshire, as part of a programme to save 拢320m ($500m) a year across Europe.

The USAF KC-135 tanker fleet which is currently based in Suffolk will be moved to Germany.

The Pentagon said the loss of about 2,000 US miliary and civilian personnel will be offset by the addition of about 1,200 people stationed permanently at Lakenheath.

The Ministry of Defence is expected to reveal plans for the site later.
