Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny: Coal Mining, War Horses and Loss
Coal mining in Castlecomer was the main industry for the town and the surrounding area for over 300 years. Owned by the Wandesforde family, the industry lead the development of the town and employed a large number of the population. During the First World War, the family鈥檚 male side, like many of the landed gentry in Ireland, joined up to do their duty for King and Country.
