Reading, Hunger & Test Tube Puppies
Jonathan Lampon and Monica Winfield sit in with the latest news and updates at breakfast.
When was the last time you sat down with a good book?
Well we're asking because the East Midlands has seen one of the biggest falls in the number of people using public libraries over the past year. According to the Chartered Institute of Public Finance, visits to our regions libraries fell by almost 7% (6.9%) compared to the national average of 4.8%. Now we know that libraries offer a lot more than borrowing books nowadays, but it got us questioning whether reading as a pastime was a thing of the past?
Also in the programme, "David Cameron should treat tackling the "armies" of people going hungry in Britain with the same political effort as the battle against terrorism" - That's according to a report from the All-Party Group on Hunger
The report outlines the changes that have taken place in the extent and causes of food bank use in this country since the group published its report last year 'Feeding Britain'. In it there are warnings that children are going for days without a substantial meal.
We are joined in the show, by John Glenn, who is the Vice Chairman of the All Party Group on Hunger.
And finally, we look at how a litter of seven puppies are the first in the world to be born using IVF.
The puppies were born in America in July to three sets of biological parents. We spoke to Doctor Alex Travis in the programme, who is from Cornell's College of Veterinary Medicine - and he was actually part of the team which successfully bred the puppies.
